Weight Management – a Solitary or Shared Journey

Eating is often made into a social occasion.

I am excited.  That’s me.  I am either excited or level, but I rarely am just pleased.  I love that you are leaving comments and talking.  I believe it helps each one of us on the journey.

Which brings me to a question – is weight loss truly a solitary journey that we must each travel alone, or is it a shared journey?

My thoughts:

It is a solitary journey in that each person has to decide to take the journey.  No one can make the decision to start for you.

The goal is one you must set for yourself.  You can have input by friend, family, professionals.  The ultimate choice of your goal is yours alone.

The planning, the shopping, the ordering at restaurants – that is your choice.  It can be influenced, but these are your choices and your actions.

When to pass a chance to eat, when to stop eating at a meal or snack, when to allow yourself to deviate from your plan, and when to limit your choices – these again are ultimately set by you.

It can be a shared journey – having someone to be accountable to.  Having someone to listen to your struggles and victories and share our joys and our frustrations.  These are benefits of a shared journey.

Having someone to remind you of your goals, your desires, and discuss your choices – whether the choice leads to your goal or drifts from the path – why you made the choice – if you made a choice away from your goal, why did you make that  choice, what can you do next time.  All these things are much easier with a partner or group than on your own.

Having someone to pick you up when you fall that you can be there for when they fall.  Someone to help when they are down.  Someone to discuss technique, food value, track progress, etc.

To rap up a short post, the journey can be solitary, or it can be a combination.  I believe the combination is the best situation.

What are your thoughts on this?

I couldn’t agree more. My daughter and I are on the weight-loss journey together. It is so much easier having a partner. We both wrote down our goals along with pictures of how we look now and how we want to look and taped them to our kitchen cabinets. We encourage each other. We push each other to keep going. It’s great!
