In previous posts I have talked about motivation to lose weight, mental attitude that we can and deserve to be a healthy weight, and if looking better comes with it – who is going to complain?
Let’s review the health benefits that come from losing extra weight.
1. Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death.
2. Being overweight can lead to
a. Heart problems (high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks, etc)
b. Diabetes
c. Arthritis
d. Gout
e. Asthma
f. Cancer (some types of)
If you lose even 10% of your weight, or even 10 pounds, your risk of having high blood pressure and high cholesterol is lessened. The loss of weight plus increased activity lessons the risk of diabetes.
Exercise is good for all of us. However, if you haven’t been active in a while, start out slow. Start by walking 10 minutes a day, then twice a day, then 3 times a day. Then increase the activity to longer periods, or even try aerobics (low impact – at least at first). Remember that it takes 20 minutes of continuous movement (walking, bike riding, aerobics, swimming – anything cardio) to get your metabolism started. Just doing this much helps prevent diabetes or helps keep in under control.
Build up your endurance some, then add in some strength exercises. Resistance bands, weights, or bars are some equipment to help you with the strength exercises.
Don’t forget the agility or stretching exercises. Yoga can help with this. Or palates.
The best part of the weight loss dieting/exercise combination is that we FEEL healthier, more energized, and alive. The fact is, we ARE healthier, more energized, and probably even look a bit better.
So what are you waiting for??? Let’s do lose/maintain our weight to improve our quality of LIFE.
