Halloween Leftover Ideas

Halloween has come and gone. What to do with all that candy! If you are like me, you do not keep it around the house. Here are some ideas:

  1. As I said in my last post, take some baggies, decide how many per child to keep, then make one bag per child per X number of days. Put a few of their favorite candies in each bag. Then once a day you can sit down together and have a candy feast. The rest depose of.
  2. Take it to work, but set it away from your desk.
  3. Let your spouse take it to work – then you won’t have the temptation.
  4. Get some more bags and put some candy in each bag. Tie the bag with a ribbon. Take your kids to a nursing home and let them give it out to the people there. You might want to call the nursing home first to arrange the visit.
  5. Feed it to your neighbors dog. (No, don’t do this – chocolate is toxic to dogs).
  6. Throw it in the outside trash can when the kids aren’t looking.
  7. Let your hubby have his friends over for a football bash – set the candy in the middle of the guys. That should take care of it! (Sorry guys).

There are any number of ways to get rid of the candy – use the caramels and tootsie rolls in a batch of brownies, put them on the top and swirl them through. Hard candies you can grind up to use as sprinkles on a cake or cookies. Even keep suckers as rewards for your kids when they make their bed and clean up their room.

Any more ideas? Leave a comment. Let’s think outside the box.

Halloween is here! Just Say No to Over Treating

Halloween is here!  Remember your strategy to avoid eating the candy?

1.  Eat a nutritious meal before the festivities start

2. Put on a costume with features that make it hard to snack. Vampire teeth, facial makeup, fake hands.

3. Make sure you will have to do some activity, like popping out from behind a bush or bale of hay.  Or maybe have a gorilla suit so you can jump up and down. Sit on the opposite side of the room from the door so you will have to walk to the door each time the bell rings.

4.  Have healthy snacks handy to grab when the candy temptation comes along.

5.  Just say no and don’t eat or drink the sugar and fats that go along with Halloween.

Another plan is to set aside a small portion of treats to have that evening, and stop with that portion.

When your kids come in with bags of candy, portion some into zip lock bags with names on the bags and number them also.  Maybe fix about 5 bags each.  Once a day, you can all sit down and get your bag of candy for that day together.  Make it a family activity.  Send the rest to work with dad, or take it yourself.

Above all, relax and have fun.  Halloween comes but once a year.
